I already have a website. Should I rebuild it or add on?

The short answer

If your site works well on a phone and has a tap-to-call button, keep it and add what’s missing. Rebuild only when it’s broken on phones, you can’t edit it, or you don’t own it.

Start with your phone

Most people looking for a local pro are on a phone. So open your site on yours. Can you call in one tap? Can you read it without zooming?

Keep it and add on if…

  • It looks right and reads easily on a phone.
  • You can change your hours and prices yourself, or someone does it for you fast.
  • The web address (your domain) is registered in your name.
  • It lists your services and the area you cover.

Rebuild if…

  • It’s broken, tiny or slow on a phone.
  • The person who built it is gone and you can’t log in.
  • The domain is in someone else’s name.
  • Fixing it would cost more than starting fresh.

What to add to a good site

  • A tap-to-call button at the top of every page.
  • A text-back for missed calls.
  • Your Google review link.
  • A list of the towns you serve.
  • Real photos of your work.
  • Clear starting prices.

Make sure you own your domain

Your domain is your web address, like yourname.com. Make sure it’s registered in your name. Ask your old web person for every login now, while things are calm.

Do it yourself

  1. Open your website on your phone. Tap the phone number. Does it call?
  2. Write down everything that’s broken or missing.
  3. Do a “WHOIS” lookup on your domain (a free search that shows who registered it).
  4. Collect your logins: domain, hosting and site builder.
  5. Count your list. A few small fixes? Add on. A long list or no logins? Rebuild.
