What should I fill in on my Google Business Profile?

The short answer

Fill in everything that helps a customer decide to call. Ten things matter most, from your category and hours to photos and reviews. It’s free, and most of it takes one evening.

The 10 things to fill in

  • Your real business name — no extra keywords stuffed in.
  • Main category — the one that matches your main job, like “Plumber” or “Hair salon”. Then add a few more that fit.
  • Phone number — one that someone answers, or that texts back.
  • Hours — including holiday hours. Only show emergency hours if you really pick up.
  • Service area — the towns you really drive to. Salons and shops show their street address instead.
  • Services — each one listed, with a starting price when you can.
  • Description — two or three plain sentences: what you do, where, and why people pick you.
  • Photos — real photos of your work, your truck and your team.
  • Website link — to your own site, not only a social media page.
  • Reviews — ask every customer, and reply to each review.

Keep it the same everywhere

Use the same name, phone and address on your profile, your website, Yelp and Foursquare. ChatGPT’s local results draw on providers like Foursquare and Yelp, so a wrong phone number there can follow you.

Keep it fresh

Fresh reviews and owner replies matter to people choosing a business. Add new photos after a good job. Check your hours before every holiday.

Do it yourself

  1. Open business.google.com on your phone and sign in.
  2. Go down the list of 10 above. Fix one item at a time.
  3. Pick the main category that matches the job you want most.
  4. Type in every service, with a starting price where you can.
  5. Add five real photos of recent work.
  6. Copy your “Ask for reviews” link and save it on your phone.
  7. Set a reminder for the first of each month: add photos, check hours, reply to reviews.
